Bill Bryson Lectures for Cardiac Rehab

Bill Bryson Impresses an Audience at Alton Maltings for Cardiac Rehab

Each year Cardiac Rehab, the Alton-based charity supporting heart disease recovery and offering primary prevention for those at risk of developing heart disease, hosts a lecture to raise much needed funds to continue its work. Recently, Alton Maltings was again honoured to host the event, especially as TV presenter, author and academic Bill Bryson gave a talk featuring exerts from his fascinating life.

Denise Ellis, Centre Manager of Cardiac Rehab's purpose built facility, said “The statistics are that on average 1 in 4 people in the UK will be affected by heart disease and 200 people die every day from heart illness. We have helped over 10,000 people at our centre, however, it costs us approximately £300 to put one person through our programme!

“As a small local charity we are reliant on fundraising events such as our Annual Lecture and the support of local people and businesses. The Bill Bryson Lecture was a huge success raising over £10,000 for the charity, with tickets being sold out within a couple of weeks of being released. Alton Maltings not only hosts our Lecture each year, they also recently hosted The Alton Rock Choir Concert for Cardiac Rehab. On 18th February 2017 Cardiac Rehab will also be holding our second Valentine’s Ball which will also be held at Alton Maltings.”

Speaking of the evening, Business Manager Nick Wright said: "It was great to have a capacity crowd fill Alton Maltings to hear the literary legend Bill Bryson. He gave sharp witted anecdotes, hilarious observations and a scattering of personal reflections that filled the room with laughter and applause."

More information about the work of Cardiac Rehab and tickets for the Valentine’s Ball are is available online.
